Christa Jarrold and Inca Jordan - UnderPinned

Christa Jarrold

My name is Christa Jarrold and I’m a freelance animator and illustrator from London. I like to draw to get stuff out of my head – it’s the best therapy as far as I’m concerned!

In 2017 I wrote and directed an animated short film, Pipe Dreams, which I completed as part of my MA in Directing Animation at the National Film and Television School. It tells the story of a woman who has to fix her plumbing to fix her self esteem. It’s a comedy (featuring plenty of toilet humour) and starred the voices of two actors I love; Bel Powley and Lewis Reeves.

The film won Best Student Film at the Smalls Film Festival and was screened at the BFI London Film Festival as well as many others, and lead to opportunities to work as an animator and screenwriter for some really cool studios – like Blink Industries – and have the chance to develop pitches for series ideas of my own.

As well as working on my own concepts, I’ve had the chance to work on some cool projects as an animator – including Majid Adnin’s beautiful film for the charity Help Refugees UK, about a young Syrian boy whose home has been torn apart by war.

Throughout my animation career, I also kept up illustration (see all of my work here). Illustration is a much quicker way to get ideas out, so I regularly make little cartoons and digital drawings around themes like mental health and feminism, all through a comedy lens.

I love designing weird characters that aren’t quite human – I’m a total nerd for fantasy so I often bring in mythological and fantastical themes into my work too.

I’ve got to do some cool illustration commissions, including a portrait of the incredible performance artist Travis Alabanza for a poem published in Gay Times Magazine for Black History Month.

For me, illustration and animation are ways to explore ideas playfully and without boundaries, through moving and static image. I love that I’m also able to make work hidden away in my room, without the need to rely on anyone else.

But when it comes to animation, collaboration is absolutely essential – with every frame requiring attention, it’s not the speediest medium to work in, but it works your imagination like nothing else.

Inca Jordan

My name is Inca Jordan, I am a 24-year-old artist living in North London. After graduating in 2017 with a Fine Art degree from Central Saint Martins, I have continued to pursue my love of contemporary art as a freelancer.

My practice involves an interplay between painting, digital print and text, through which I aim to address and challenge my thoughts and feelings about digital culture and the transience we experience as a result of new technologies.

My work strives to imbue value into low quality and pixilated images created with new technologies, using the traditional and time-consuming medium of oil painting.

Wishing to disrupt the constancy dictated by technology I apply several thin layers of paint over time, building up texture and form. As a result of my process, I generally don’t have the finished composition in mind when I begin the piece but come to it through constant experimentation and evaluation.

When I am not making my own work, I spend my time volunteering at Two Temple Place, one of London’s most incredible museums and venues, dedicated to promoting culture. The museum is currently exhibiting John Ruskin: The Power of Seeing to mark the bicentenary of his birth.
